Contains slides including a group of seven interiors of Marnham's house taken in August 1968, three showing servants in February 1968 and one of the visit of the Mayor for the celebration of the Queen's birthday on 20 April 1968. The majority show the garden, from scenes in April 1967 to seven transparencies making up a panorama taken on the eve of departure in March 1970. In between these are extensive views both of individual clumps of flowers and more general scenes.

192 x 125 mm. Showing the city of Johannesburg in its early stages, with single-storey buildings and tents on the Witwatersrand ridge. A photograph probably taken in 1886-7 during the first year of the city's life. Surface gold was discovered on the Witwatersrand in 1884 but it was not officially declared an open mining area until 1886.

Scope and Contents A half length seated studio portrait of John Fairbairn (1794-1864), Cape journalist and politician. Born in Roxburghshire and educated at Edinburgh University, Fairbairn came to Cape Town in 1823 to open a school with Thomas Pringle. This project was not successful and in 1824 he became the first editor (with Pringle) of the short-lived ‘South African Journal’. From 1824-1859 he edited the ‘South African Commercial Advertiser’ and was a campaigner in the causes of a free press and...

A brother of professor Roderick Noble, he arrived in Cape Town in 1857 and worked as a journalist on the newly founded Cape Argus. From 1865-97 he served as a clerk to the house of Assembly and was the editor of The Cape Monthly Magazine from 1875-79.
