190 x 124 mm. A general view from a neighbouring hill looking down on the town of Heidelberg, situated on the Biesbok Spruit River thirty miles southeast of Johannesburg. Heidelberg was the capital of the South African Republic during South African War of 1880-1.

Scope and Contents

A half length seated studio portrait of Henry Hall (1815-1882) of the Royal Engineers Department wearing uniform. Originally apprenticed to an engineer, Hall entered Government service as a foreman in the Royal Engineer Department in 1839 and was ordered to the Cape in 1842. He left the colony for health reasons in 1852 but returned in 1853 and was promoted Clerk of Works in 1858, finally leaving the Cape in 1860. Hall was a regular contributor to ‘The Cape Monthly Magazine’.

The astronomer John Herschel (1792-1871) spent the years 1834-8 in the Cape, carrying out important work in the mapping of the stars of the southern hemisphere. During this period the Herschel family lived in an old Cape Dutch farmhouse called 'Feldhausen' in Claremont, which was purchased from one V.A. Schomberg in 1835. Schomberg was later permitted to build a house on one corner of the estate and this was named 'Herschel'. ...
