Cape homesteads. Fransch Hoek [Franschhoek], Burgundy 1791, 1925

Scope and Contents

203 x 151 mm. Showing the homestead 'Burgundy' built on land settled by Pierre de Villiers in 1694. The main gable, dated 1791 and one of the oldest in the area, is the only surviving one from a fire which also destroyed the thatch; the building as seen has a corrugated iron roof but it is unclear whether this photograph was taken before or after the fire.

203 x 152 mm. Showing the T-shaped house named after La Coste in Provence, France, by Jean Gardior, who settled the land in 1694. An old waterwheel remains from the early days but the house seen here, with a decorative iron roof over the stoep, dates from 1844.

Scope and Contents 190 x 139 mm. Showing the homestead 'La Dauphiné' at French Hoek, situated on land settled by Estienne Niel in 1694. With a group of African labourers seated on the road in the foreground. 'The present house has two good gables of the early neo-classical type, the east one dated 1800. The end gables are exceptionally finished, with the apex split into two scrolls: they are reminiscent of the outstnding end-gables of Bien Donne. Under the west gable, there is a dummy door, of plaster. A...

Showing the front facade of the house in Tokai built by Andreas Rauch in the 1790's: 'This is the usual peninsula u-shaped house, but with an added bar, with gabled ends ... The steeply-sloping ground calls for an exceptionally high stoep, unique in being reached not centrally, but at the two ends by twin flights of steps, gracefully curved ... The forecourt is marked by symmetrically-placed outbuildings on two sides, and a line of pillars on the third: the two central pillars...

114 x 147 mm. Photograph, mounted on card, of a painting from an unidentified publication. There are a number of annotations on the reverse, at least some of which refer to uniform. Unfortunately, they are not all complete as the card upon which the photograph has been mounted has, at some stage, been reduced from its original size losing some of the annotations in the process.

Many photos do not appear in the exact numerical order given in the listing. The rest of the images are uncaptioned, but their general locations have been identified by reference to the diary RCMS 353/1.

Cape Point [i.e. Kaappunt] and Lighthouse, 1882 - 1884

231 x 186 mm. A view looking along the cliffs at Cape Point south of Simon's Town, with the lighthouse standing at the highest point. Built in 1860, the lighthouse of the extreme southern point was replaced by another in 1915.
