A collection of lantern slides of Australia (plus one duplicate). 5-10 are marked 'Commonwealth of Australia' and have serial numbers. 12-22 are marked 'Department of Agriculture and Stock, Brisbane'. The slides' captions have been used as titles and have been recorded as found.

199 x 144 mm. A view looking down from the deck of a warship on to Samoan longboats. No individual chiefs are identifiable. The exact date of this event has not been ascertained, but was probably around 13th May 1899.

200 x 140 mm. A view showing a group of Samoans armed with swords, rifles and pieces of wood. Whether this is a genuine group of looters or an arranged photograph is not known: if they are Mata’ afan men it seems strange that they have been allowed to retain their arms and weapons.

On the wharf itself stands a warehouse with timber piled in front of it. The North Shore can be seen across Waitemata Harbour, with the extinct volcanic island of Rangitoto in the distance.
