109 x 151 mm. oval print. A head and shoulders portrait of the young king wearing his coronation uniform. Malietoa Tanumafili, the son of Malietoa Laupepa, was the British choice for the throne of Samoa, but his reign was brief: crowned on March 23 1899, he left Samoa (when Mata‘afa came to power following the partition) to continue his education in Fiji.
