A collection of lantern slides of Australia (plus one duplicate). 5-10 are marked 'Commonwealth of Australia' and have serial numbers. 12-22 are marked 'Department of Agriculture and Stock, Brisbane'. The slides' captions have been used as titles and have been recorded as found.

Central Avenue, Fitzroy Gardens [Melbourne], 1877 - 1879
187 x 132 mm. A view looking towards a meeting of paths in the gardens, with various pieces of statuary placed among the shrubs and trees. The gardens, situated to the east of the city centre, were the creation of James Sinclair who had earlier planned the Czar’s gardens at St Petersburg. Sinclair arrived in Melbourne in 1854 and in 1857 was appointed Curator of the land which was to become the Fitzroy Gardens.

‘Cerberus’ in Dock, 1870 - 1880
118 x 184 mm. A rear view, showing the hull and twin screws of the ship in dry dock. ‘Cerberus’ was a turret ironclad with 4 18-ton muzzle loading guns, designed for harbour defence. She arrived in Port Phillip in 1871 (partly financed by the British Government), and was finally sunk in 1926 to form a breakwater at Black Rock in Port Phillip Harbour. For some years she was the most powerful ship in the southern hemisphere.
Ceremonial wooden baton, 1860 - 1930
The baton’s stone head is bound with wooden fibre, and its slender wooden shaft is inlaid with mother-of-pearl. It was worn suspended from the neck with the aid of a fibre cord pierced through the upper shaft. The baton was produced in the Solomon Islands, probably Malaita, during the late nineteenth or early twentieth centuries.
