The Gladstone Hotel-Lane Cove River (Headquarters Xmas 1888), 1888
155 x 98 mm. A view of the exterior of the hotel, with figures posing in front, and the river in the background. Lane Cove is a suburb on the north side of Sydney Harbour. Photographer probably an amateur.

201 x 151 mm. A view from high ground, looking across hilly wooded land, with the river in the foreground. The land around the river has been partially cleared and cultivated, with many leafless trees showing evidence of ‘ringbarking’.
The Government Printing Office and temporary Telegraph Office, 1875
265 x 207 mm. A three-quarters front view of these two buildings from the street, along which are telegraph poles and wires. The first telegraph message sent in Queensland was from Brisbane to Ipswich on 11 Apr. 1861. By 21 Oct. 1872 there was direct telegraphic communication with Europe.

The Grand Arch, Jenolan Caves, 1911
The caves, a popular tourist spot since the 1860's, and situated 115 miles by road west of Sydney, were originally reached via Oberon, but in 1868 the railway reached Mount Victoria, and from there passengers walked. The road down to the caves, known as the 'Five Mile' was completed around 1887 as far as the Great Arch. In 1896 the road through the arch was completed. The photograph shows a car on the road having just come through the large rock tunnel.

Landscape format. Sir Joseph Ward, the Premier, in the Grand Stand. This is the 'basin' reserve: originally intended for a dock: during the great earthquake the whole of this was raised. Wellington.
