When the RES Headquarters was rebuilt in 1934-36, gifts of timber for panelling and furnishing were obtained from Empire Governments, companies and individuals. Many were destroyed during the bombing of 1941 and replacement gifts were received. This file coordinates pre and post-war correspondence.

Scope and Contents 348 x 264 mm. A view looking along the waterfront at Tauranga, with boats and a jetty at the left and a row of shops along the quay in the centre of the print. In the foreground are small wooden cabins with the more substantial residential buildings in the background on a small hill. The picture contains many interesting details: people on the street (some the merest ghost images), the names of shops and banks and on almost every wall, posters enjoining the reader to ‘Vote for Kelly’....

127 x 182 mm. oval print. A head and shoulders portrait of this Maori Chief, a heavily tattooed man wearing a cloak made from birds’ feathers (probably kiwi, a ‘kahu-kiwi’). The ‘moko’ of this chief is very well defined, with complex designs around nose and chin, and diverging curved lines running upwards over his forehead from the bridge of his nose. Te Haere, companion in Mr Hursthouse’s imprisonment, 1884 - 1885

139 x 201 mm. A full length view of a Maori male, dressed in a cloak decorated with hanging black cords (korowai). Charles Wilson Hursthouse (1841-1911) was a surveyor and engineer captured by the Maori Chief Mahuki in 1883 while surveying for the North Island main trunk railway. He and another Englishman were kept bound hand and foot for 48 hours.

The taking of this photograph is described by Montgomery: ‘One morning at six o’ clock, I landed with Mr Palmer at Soa, and walked up to the village with the camera. The teacher here is a well-known man. Joseph Wate was on board the ‘Southern Cross’ when John Patteson was killed at Nukapu, and has always borne a good character. His wife has a charming face, and looked a worthy...

Teaching Staff and Pupils, and The Patteson Memorial Chapel, St. Barnabas' College - Melanesian Mission Station, 1885

Facing p.32, referred to on p.40. John Coleridge Patteson, 1827-1871, went to the South Seas as a missionary in 1855 and six years later he was made Bishop of Melanesia. In 1866 he moved the headquarters of the Mission from New Zealand to Norfolk Island, and established St. Barnabas' College 'on a slight ridge, half a mile from the sea' (Spruson, p.39). Bishop Patteson was murdered on 16 September 1871 and a memorial chapel was erected to commemorate him: it was completed in 1880.
