Tauranga, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand, 1876
Scope and Contents
348 x 264 mm. A view looking along the waterfront at Tauranga, with boats and a jetty at the left and a row of shops along the quay in the centre of the print. In the foreground are small wooden cabins with the more substantial residential buildings in the background on a small hill. The picture contains many interesting details: people on the street (some the merest ghost images), the names of shops and banks and on almost every wall, posters enjoining the reader to ‘Vote for Kelly’. William Kelly (1840-1907) represented the East Coast, or Bay of Plenty District in Parliament from 1870-75, and again from 1887-1896.
