A view of moored sailing ships, tied three deep to the shore. Stockton lies just north of Newcastle, on a peninsula the other side of the Hunter River. Like Newcastle it is an important coal producer; in the early days of the colony, the worst convicts from Newcastle were sent to Stockton as lime-burners.
