She simply presented herself at the doorway of the house where I happened to be lodging; there she waited silently until someone came and spoke to her and gave bread to her children, which they greedily devoured' (Thomson 1879, vol.1, p.19).

This photograph, captioned ‘aged 11 years’, is reproduced in Sultan Jahan Begum’s memoirs. The photographer’s signature has been largely trimmed off, but it is almost certainly Fitzjames.
