The flood waters are just beginning to encroach on the Harbour Office buildings, the floor of which was under 1 foot of water at the height of the flood.

84 x 115 mm. Woodburytype. A view showing a beggarwoman and her two children standing in the street: 'The woman shown in the present picture was evidently no professional beggar. She simply presented herself at the doorway of the house where I happened to be lodging; there she waited silently until someone came and spoke to her and gave bread to her children, which they greedily devoured' (Thomson 1879, vol.1, p.19).

239 x 124 mm. Full length portrait of Shah Jahan Begum, Begum of Bhopal, and Sultan Jahan Begum, seated on chairs draped with woven carpets. This photograph, captioned ‘aged 11 years’, is reproduced in Sultan Jahan Begum’s memoirs. The photographer’s signature has been largely trimmed off, but it is almost certainly Fitzjames.
