Scope and Contents

250 x 200 mm. General view of the bungalow at the top of the hill. A heavy square stucco covered bungalow seemingly in a state of some disrepair, the house offers a mixture of European and Indian styles. The building as a whole has something of the appearance of a mausoleum. The curved pitch of the roof runs up to a parapet enclosing a central dome; the parapet, and the four outer corners of the roof, are decorated with small, squat pointed towers.

Beside the roadway in the left foreground is a spirit and opium shop. Exact location unidentified, although Purcell (1928, p. 81) states that the Pine Apple Lane referred to [in a 1807-1808 map of George Town] is now Gottlieb Road. Whether this picture shows a portion of Gottlieb Road, which ran along the southern edge of Mount Erskine Cemetery, has not been determined. ...
