'A poor photo of Messr Gleghorn, Harris and Stephen's Drapery Establishment situated in the Market Square. It was taken during the Jubilee, which accounts for the decorations. It was here that Em used to be Head Book-keeper for the Retail Dept. The church on the left, a little way up the hill, is that of St. Augustine's, Roman Catholic.'

A view looking across an open courtyard towards the store, a fine example of the coral architecture of Suakin with particularly large and impressive ‘roshans’, the characteristic casement windows made of Java teak openings, carvings and other embellishments. A group of Arabs and a few Europeans stand in the courtyard facing the photographer.

Sargent, 'South Africa: seven lectures (London, 1914). Stephenson had been recommended by the British South Africa Company. The numbering used in the catalogue reflects Stephenson's own numbering.
