The typewritten caption on the reverse reads 'These women have migrated from Portuguese East Africa from distances as far as six hundred miles. They are all members of the Wamawia tribes. This tribe is to be found working throughout the sisal estates of Tanganyika, the women have their faces carved into elaborate designs and wear ornaments thrust through their lips'.

Showing a leopard cub tethered in a pen: 'Kassagama presented me with a fine young leopard and a splendid bull .... The leopard is a bit of a handful and we spent the better part of this morning in seeing that he is securely fastened. He is only about twice the size of a terrier, but very fierce, and growls and snarls incessantly. I only hope he won't make a meal of poor Tots.' (Bell 1907, February 15).
