This is a studio portrait taken against a painted backdrop with props such as a tree trunk and branches in the foreground. From the heaviness of Gedge’s beard and the obviously old state of his clothes, it is likely that the photograph was taken shortly after one of his several African journeys of the 1890s.

Raynor Arthur was appointed Governor and Commander in Chief of the Falkland Islands in August 1953 and arrived at Port Stanley on 1 April 1954. He was appointed KCMG in January 1957 and left on 22 January 1957. Most of these photographs are sepia.
