Smyly Sierra Leone and Gold Coast [i.e. Ghana] Collection
A collection including a black album, containing 29 photographs and with eight blank sides, and loose prints and negatives, relating to the career of Sir Crampton Smyly. There are typed captions which have been used as the basis of catalogue entries. As well as photographs of the visit to Sierra Leone of the Duke of Connaught on 15 December 1910, there are numerous photographs of events of 1929, the year in which Sir Crampton Smyly retired.

The volume sheds light on the relationship between the type-founding firms and their attitude towards the technical innovations effecting their trade. There are three accompanying letters to Albert Ehrman regarding the collection, from Stanley Morison, The Times, 2 April 1952, and from A.E. Musson, Economic History Department, Manchester University, 16 February 1954 and 6 July 1954.

Written from the opposite end of the book are: fo. 33v: log of the ship 'Mary' from Surat towards England, 25 and 26 May 1700. fo. 32v: letter from Thomas Walker to an unidentified recipient, undated [18th cent.], followed (fos. 31v-24r) by an account of Walker's travels in India. fo. 5v: 'Jack Brandish' (18th cent.)
