Scope and Contents

Bundle of papers and a selection of annotated original documents on AHP collected by Anthony Pollen for his niece Lucy Jebb, possibly connected with her research for the potential biography of AHP. The file contains valuable biographical material on AHP and is comprised of: a Pollen family tree; signed menu card for Maud Pollen's engagement dinner at the Savoy Hotel, 2 April 1898; signed menu card for a 'Dinner to Sir Alfred Milner, K.C.B., Governor of the Cape Colony' [later part of South Africa] at the Savoy Hotel, 23 March 1897; AHP's 'Blue Ribbon Army' temperance certificate, dated 25 August 1888; Maria Margaret Pollen's travel documents, dated 4 October 1892; a handwritten note guaranteeing AHP's entrance, as a 'Gold Staff Officer', to the 1901 Coronation of Edward VII; posters for AHP's campaign for the parliamentary seat of Walthamstow, 1895; exercise book containing notes for an essay or speech entitled 'The Art of Public Speaking'; original advertisements for AHP's book 'The Navy at War'; printed synopsis of a lecture on AHP's book 'The Navy at War', delivered on 15 December 1915, with colour frontispiece and original advertisements for consumer goods and shops in London; copies of selected AHP obituaries, condolence letters, and correspondence with naval officers; and a letter from Richard Davenport-Hines to Lucy Jebb, dated 26 September 1991. With Anthony Pollen's notes and drafts of his correspondence to Lucy Jebb about his views of AHP.
