Subjects include: a still life painting begun by Churchill of a buddha and flame lily, May 1948; the Congress of Europe at the Hague [Netherlands], May 1948 and work on Churchill's speech ["The grand design"]; going on to Oslo [Norway], with work on various speeches; the escape of Churchill's new poodle, Rufus III; a fire in the grounds at Chartwell [Kent]; a press statement on Palestine, May 1948; visit to Perth [Scotland], May 1948, with speech [on "The evils of Socialist government"]; the arrival of the first copy of the American edition of "The Gathering Storm"; accompanying Churchill to Aix-en-Provence [France], August-September 1948; painting at Fontaine de Vaucluse, the village of Vaucluse and Lourmarin; staying with the Duke and Duchess of Windsor [earlier King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson] at Antibes, September 1948.
