Correspondents include: Sir Cecil Hurst on subjects including the publication of a volume of his collected papers to mark his 80th birthday (3); Francis Vallat [Assistant Legal Adviser, Foreign Office] on the publication of HL's letter to Sir [William] Eric Beckett [Legal Adviser, Foreign Office] on recognition of China [see also LAUT 3/16]; Tien-Hsi Cheng [F T Cheng], Chinese Ambassador to Britain; Shabtai Rosenne [earlier Sefton Rowson], Legal Adviser to the Israeli Foreign Ministry, on HL's visit for the 25th anniversary of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the implementation of the United Nations human rights provisions and Israel's decision to accept the jurisdiction of the International Court (3); Sydney Roberts, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge, sending a message of goodwill to the Hebrew University; Sir Arnold McNair on subjects including his poor opinion of the International Court (8); Sir Eric Beckett, asking for HL's opinion on an official despatch for all Missions abroad on the subject of recognition, the legality of atomic weapons and the Norwegian Fisheries case (3); Sir Hartley Shawcross [Attorney-General] on the status of Korea (2) [see LAUT 7/42 for HL's response]; Elihu Lauterpacht, on subjects including writing to the Director of the London School of Economics, accepting his invitation to help with the teaching of international law (7); Jules Basdevant, President of the International Court of Justice; G M Trevelyan; Rachel Lauterpacht on subjects including a holiday in the south of France and a car accident suffered by Elihu (7).
