Scope and Contents

Inscribed on the flyleaf, 'J. Henry Middleton, Grand Hotel, Athens' and 'Notebook X'.
The notebook consists of Middleton's notes on classical architecture and topography in Athens during the Spring of 1892.
In particular his focus is upon the monuments on the acropolis of Athens: Propylaea, the Parthenon, the Erechtheum, the Asklepeion, the theatre of Dionysius, the Acropolis walls and stairs, Stoa of Eumenes, roof tiles.
Also the bee hive (tholos) tomb at Menidi (Attika), Roman mosaic by the harbour of Zea (Piraeus), sketch views of Mount Pentelikon from the Plains of Marathon, the Bay of Marathon, 'Roman stoa by the Horolosium', and 'rock-cut tunnel and stairs to well' at Mycenae (north gallery and postern gate?)

Physical Description

Hardback notebook with dark brown, watered-fabric-covered card covers, loss to the top of the spine. The binding is worn and loose and the text block is starting to separate from the covers, the leaves pp. 2-3 and pp.32-33 are entirely loose from the text block.
Pasted on to the spine a small paper handwritten label with the text 'X'.
Handwritten in ink with hand drawn illustrations in graphite pencil and gouache wash.
1 loose insert of 1 leaf of handwritten notes in pencil on r. and v. placed between the front cover and flyleaf. Paginated in pencil by JHM at the top left and right hand corners of verso and recto respectively.
