Li Yuese is Joseph Needham’s Chinese name, one that he used throughout his life, and by which he is best known in China. This is his first seal. It was acquired sometime between 1937 and Joseph Needham’s departure for China in late 1942. It was probably carved and sent from China at the request of Lu Gwei-Djen, though there is no clear evidence. It is on the verso of first page of the North-West diary, 7 August 1943.
