Li Danyao is another name adopted early by Joseph Needham, combining his surname (Li) with a pseudonym (Danyao). Dan means elixir and yao splendid, reflecting Joseph Needham’s early and growing interest in Chinese alchemy and Daoism. The seal is made of aluminium from a Japanese warplane, and was bought by Joseph Needham in Lanzhou, Gansu province on 10 September 1943. “Fri. 10th [Sept., 1943] ... aluminium (Japanese plane) seal for me, 20.” It is then added to the verso of the first page of the North-West diary.
