Scope and Contents

This is a ceramic hat stand made in a folk kiln. The painting was done by Yu Ziming at the beginning of summer 1887 (li xia 立夏) at his studio 珠山逸致室 (Pearl Mountain Studio of Relaxation). It depicts three Chinese gods relaxing in a cool place with a palm leaf fan while boiling water using a gourd. The inscriptions on the stand reads: 採芝寿世 (Picking lingzhi mushrooms for long-life); 丁亥立夏画于珠山逸致室西窗 (drawn next to the west window of Pearl Mountain Studio of Relaxation at the beginning of summer 1887). This hat stand had been broken into pieces and has been glued back together.

Biographical / Historical

Yu Ziming, also known as Yanxiyuren, (1843-1911) was a ceramic painter of the late Qing Dynasty. He was active in the Tongzhi and Guangxu periods and good at figure and flower-and-bird painting. His figure paintings often depict ancient Chinese gods, while his flower-and-bird painting was famous for using bright colours.
