Scope and Contents

This is a replica of a ding 鼎 ritual food vessel. The original dates from the Western Zhou period and is in the collection of the National Palace Museum in Taipei. 'This lobed tripod ding has two lugs on the rim and simple cylindrical legs. The three units of decoration on the body are centred over the three legs, each one consisting of an animal mask flanked on either side by downward-facing gui dragons. The decoration is in high relief against a lei wen 雷文 ground' (description supplied by the National Palace Museum, Taipei). There is a cast inscription on the inside of the vessel, and the logo of the National Palace Museum, Taipei is on the base.

Given to Joseph Needham by Dr Wu Ta-yu (Wu Dayou 吳大猷), Academia Sinica, Taipei in 1984 during his visit to Taiwan.
