Decorated 'Nanking ware' ceramic plate, c.Early 20th century
Scope and Contents
This is a large multicoloured ceramic crackle pattern Chinese plate with a 2cm wide etched bronze effect border. The scene painted on the plate depicts horsemen and foot-soldiers chasing a man on a horse, using green, blue, orange and yellow pigments. The underside has floral patterns in green, orange and yellow around the edge, with a black painted base, in the centre of which is a small brown square, incised with the reign mark 'Cheng hua nian zhi 成化年製' (Chenghua reigned 1464-1487). Little information is available, but this ceramic and others in the same style appear to have been made in Nanjing from the early to mid 20th century, making it likely that they belonged to Lu Gwei-Djen 魯桂珍, who was from Nanjing.
