Published by Faber and Faber in 1987, The Ice is Singing takes the form of a diary by a woman suffering from post-natal depression. She abandons her young twins and drives through the frozen landscape of wintery Yorkshire, relating the stories of other parents and other children, in an attempt to get to grips with her own experience.
