Biographical / Historical

The compiler of the album is likely to have been a man named Arthur Lehmann, according to a stamp which appears on the inside of the front cover. A portrait of Lehmann as a young man appears on the first page, beneath which is his signature and ‘1904 Bombay.’ Photographs featuring Lehmann have been marked. He may have lived in India, since one is captioned ‘Our house in Poona.' The album appears to document the travels of a small group of gentlemen and their families. Captions identify Lehmann, B. Jahnig and A. Redemann; the other individuals are identified only by their surnames: Woortman, Nordt, Fleischer, Zimmerman, Lahla, Linde and Strampp. The album formed part of the photograph collection of the British geologist and climatologist, Sir Nicholas John Shackleton (1937-2006).
