Scope and Contents

An illustrated diary of Christopher Barlow's journey from Kano, 23 February 1928, through French Equatorial Africa, Belgium Congo, Sudan, Uganda and Kenya, arriving at Mombasa on 27 March, a total of nearly 3,500 miles. On pages iii-iv is a list of journeys undertaken by Barlow, 9 March 1927-19 February 1928. The volume includes thirty inserted photographs, as well as a copy of Barlow's entry in the 'Nigeria Civil Service list', 1929, and a letter to the Librarian of the Royal Empire Society, 4 October 1961, from Francis de Forest Daniel, a friend of Barlow's, who was a D.O. in Sokoto at the time of his death.

Biographical / Historical

Christopher Matthew Barlow (1898-1930), M.C., B.A., served in the R.F.A. in France and the E.E.F. in Palestine before entering the Nigerian Administrative Service in 1924. He was posted to Zaria in August 1924, and later transferred to Katsina. He bought a two-seater car in Lagos in 1927, and embarked on a series of journeys through Africa. He died at Shendam on 9 February 1930.
