Letter to “Teddy” [Edward Rose] from his father, Caleb Rose, 13 October [1893]
Scope and Contents
Sent from Ipswich. Enclosing a genealogy that his father drew many years ago (take care of it) and telling Edward that the Roses descend from a Caleb Rose, Rector of Whepstead near Bury (there are several tombs there); he had a nice drawing of the church at Whepsted by his brother; the oval portrait that he had was of Robert Rose, Surgeon of Hartest, Suffolk who was his father’s [Caleb Burrell Rose’s] grandfather; Caleb Burrell Rose’s uncle was John Rose, Surgeon, of Eye, and his daughter Susan Rose was the lady doctor; Caleb Burrell Rose spoke very highly of Susan Rose, both for professional ability and goodness of character; he was wrong that his father’s brother died while a student, he was practising as a surgeon in London when he died of a dissection wound.
Also writing that he would try to get Groomes’ Suffolk Tales; Munna [his wife] was still getting her old pain after eating, but has been better for the past few days; he hopes the French Domestic [nurse] will be a success; and to tell Lucy and Dorothy [Rose] that Goltz and Dinah [dogs] sleep and snore all evening.
