Edward Rose: writings and family correspondence

Scope and Contents

MS Add. 10138 contains scripts (draft and later versions) of plays and other writings by Rose, as well as family correspondence covering Rose’s life from childhood until his death. Other writings by Rose include ‘The Rose Reader’ (a book outlining a method to teach children to read), a novel and poetry. Collected souvenir programmes and promotional material relating to 19th century theatre are also included. The correspondence (MS Add.10138/3) has been calendared to provide short summaries of the contents, including some direct quotation. The catalogue has retained original historic language that may be offensive, inaccurate or inappropriate. In order to reflect the original context of creation, such historic language has not been edited or replaced.

Arrangement

Play scripts have been arranged by rough date and then alphabetically within the dates range. The correspondence was arranged chronologically when deposited, and has been kept in that order.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The papers were purchased in June 2016 from a descendant of Edward Rose.

Related Materials

The Department of Manuscripts and Archives at Cambridge University Library also holds another group of Edward Rose's correspondence and papers (MS. Add. 9526) which were deposited in 1998. MS Add.9526 contains many letters from actors, actresses and theatre managers, about current productions for the London stage, and for tours in the provinces, as well as some biographical information.
