Scope and Contents

Sent from Ipswich, to Edward in Germany.
Thanking Edward for a letter and telling him that ‘By the Sea’ was in that day’s Illustrated London News and though they didn’t send proofs it reads well and there don’t seem to be mistakes.
Also telling Edward that there was a letter for him from Miss Barry and 2 manuscript parcels (which could wait until he returned from Hildesheim); his hotel (in Hildesheim) sounded like good value and he should look out for any old German prints in shops as they are good; that he hadn’t seen Mr George’s artist friend again, Barker was going to Devon and Chrissie was visiting friends in Halesworth; there were splendid fireworks in the Arboretum [Christchurch Park, Ipswich] on Thursday; everyone was talking about a recent murder, the son of a rich farmer Mr Page of Brantham near Manningtree was charged with shooting a young woman from a neighbouring farm last Sunday and the inquest was that day; and the Royal Yacht (with the Queen on board) ran down a gentleman’s yacht, drowning the three on board. In his opinion the Royal Yacht incident was the fault of those who drowned as they shouldn’t have tried to cross before the Royal Yacht which was going fast. Sending love from everyone especially Chrissie, and asking Edward to pass on regards to Bianchi.
