Scope and Contents

Typescript and manuscript correspondence and papers compiled during the course of research into the history of Jardine, Matheson & Co. The subjects of the letters include the Peking Office, the Import Department, and the Tsingtao and Tientsin Agencies. The correspondents include D.G.M. Bernard, W.J. Keswick, David Landale, D. Rod Mackenzie, J.J. Paterson, F.A. Pollock and C.H. Ross. The remaining papers include two copies of a memoranda by F.M.P. de Graça on the China Sugar Refinery; two copies of notes by Choa Po Sin on the refinery; a short resumé of the organisation of the Jardine Engineering Corporation Ltd in China; two copies of a table of shipments of raw silk made by Jardine, Matheson & Co. Ltd, Canton, during the season 1918-1930; a memorandum on Jardine, Matheson & Co.'s Establishment Charges for a period of one year and the total number of its employees, 27 December 1938; two copies of a memorandum on the value of Hong Kong Property M L 99/100, Hong Kong, 17 July 1939; an account of the voyage around the world completed by Henry Keswick's yacht the 'Cutty Sark' from November 1920 to July 1921; 'Regulations pertaining to residents desiring to return to their homes in Hongkew' from the Eastern Commander of the Japanese Expeditionary Forces in China; and pages from the 'British Chamber of Commerce Journal', Shanghai, August 1919, pp. 116-117, on the Chambers which are to meet in November.
