Scope and Contents

Semi-official correspondence between Jardine Matheson, Hong Kong and Shanghai, and Jardine Matheson, Kobe, Tokyo and Yokohama, with enclosed papers:

1. Semi-official letters from Tokyo and Yokohama to Hong Kong and Shanghai:

a) A copy of an unnumbered letter from F. Gandossi, Yokohama, to Mr [J.H.] Keswick, Jardine, Matheson & Co. Ltd, [Shanghai], c/o Balfour, Guthrie & Co. Ltd, San Francisco, 4 June 1947. This letter is distinct from the main series of letters from Tokyo/Yokohama to Shanghai for 1947, comprising sections 1b-c and 3b-c.

b) Copies of letters nos 1, 3, 5 (2 copies) and 6 from F. Gandossi, Yokohama, to J.H. Keswick, Shanghai, 4 June-4 September 1947. The numbers for nos 1 and 3 have been added subsequently in pencil.

c) Original letter no. 7 from M.L. Railton, Tokyo, to J.H. Keswick, Shanghai, 8 September 1947. The number has been added subsequently in pen.

d) Original letters nos 2-3 from F. Gandossi, Yokohama, to D.F. Landale, Hong Kong, 12 June 1947 and 20 August 1947. The number for no. 2 has been added subsequently in pencil.

e) Original letters nos 1-14 from M.L. Railton, Tokyo, to D.F. Landale, Hong Kong, 15 September-27 December 1947.

Nos 4 and 8-12 from Tokyo/Yokohama to Shanghai, 1947, are in the third section.

2. Copies of letters nos 1-27 from D.F. Landale (mainly) and R. Gordon, Hong Kong, to F. Gandossi, Yokohama, and (mainly) M.L. Railton, Tokyo and Yokohama, 6 August-30 December 1947.

3. Copies of letters from Tokyo and Yokohama to J.H. Keswick, Shanghai:

a) No. 1 from D.W.J. Clark, Tokyo, 1 August 1947. The number has been added subsequently in pen. This letter is distinct from the main series of letters from Tokyo/Yokohama to Shanghai for 1947, comprising sections 1b-c and 3b-c.

b) No. 4 from F. Gandossi, Yokohama, 1 August 1947

c) Nos 8-12 from M.L. Railton, Tokyo, 24 October-14 December 1947.

5. Copies of letters nos 134-136 from J.J. Paterson, Hong Kong, to A. McDonald, Kobe, 31 January-15 April 1941.

6. Original letters nos 194-203 from A. McDonald, Kobe, to J.J. Paterson, Hong Kong, 17 January-13 May 1941, including monthly business reports.
