Christmas letters and historical papers, 1921-1956
Scope and Contents
A file of papers of historical interest kept by B.D.F. Beith concerned mainly with Jardine, Matheson & Co. Ltd and China. The papers are arranged chronologically and include the following items:
1. Correspondence of B.D.F. Beith, including with the China Association, London, J.H. Keswick, Shanghai, Ronald Hall, Lewes, J.F. Owen, London, J.T. Pratt, London, and A.E. Smith, London, including reminiscences.
2. Editions of Matheson & Co. Ltd's Christmas Letter for 1948-1949 and 1951-1955, sent to Beith.
3. Press cuttings.
4. An article from 'China & Far East Finance & Commerce', 9 November 1921, entitled 'The Ancient House of Ewo'.
5. A copy of the speech of H.M. Consul-General Sidney Barton at the opening of Jardine, Matheson & Co. Ltd's new premises at 27 The Bund on 15 November 1922 entitled 'Ewo's Record of Public Service', taken from the 'British Chamber of Commerce Journal', Shanghai, December 1922.
6. Detailed notes by J.F. Owen on staff members, December 1937.
7. A memorandum by John Buchanan-Jardine on the China trade, c. 1938.
8. An account by Charles Barraclough of his experience working for Jardine, Matheson & Co. Ltd in China, including as an outport agent, 29 August 1938.
9. An extract from Gerald Yorke's broadcast on Hong Kong, 1953.
The ring-binder is labelled 'Sundry memos and extracts of some Historical interest' and 'No. 3'.

Access to the collection is subject to special conditions and is at the discretion of Matheson and Co. Ltd, part of the Jardine Matheson Group. Records described in the catalogue as being in a bad condition are in a fragile state that precludes them being made available to readers.
Access is generally available to documents dated up to 1969. Access to some earlier records may be restricted under the terms of the Data Protection Act, 1998.
