Scope and Contents

Papers regarding the estate of the late J.J. Bell-Irving, with some related correspondence:

1. Three copies of a letter from McJerrow & Stevenson, solicitors, Lockerbie, to D.G.M. Bernard, Matheson & Co. Ltd, 2 July 1936, regarding the estate of the late J.J. Bell-Irving, with memoranda concerning the estate, including securities, suggested investments, purchases, sales, shares, Mrs Ormrod's securities, Major and Mrs Ormrod's Marriage Trust, the Education Trust, and the available income after providing for income tax and surtax.

2. A summary of suggestions for sales of shares of J.J. Bell-Irving, deceased, by Fielding, Son & Macleod, stock-brokers, London, and six schedules, 17 July 1936: miscellaneous holdings; mining shares; small holdings, etc.; tea and rubber shares; Canadian Pacific common shares; and International Nickel Company of Canada common shares

3. Copies by McJerrow & Stevenson of documents relating to the settlement of J.J. Bell-Irving's estate, made in 1936:

a) Deeds of authority and indemnity by J.J. Bell-Irving, Eva Gertrude Bell-Irving, Ethel Mary Maitland and Eva Margaretta Ormrod to the Trustees of the Maitland-Ormrod Trust Fund, dated October 1922, December 1924, 15 May 1925, November 1926, 21 November 1927, July 1928 (two versions) and May 1929.

b) Trust deed by J.J. Bell-Irving establishing an Education Fund for his grandchildren Ivor Colin James Maitland and Sylvia Gwendoline Eva Maitland, 24 October 1923.

c) Discharge and indemnity by J.J. Bell-Irving, Eva Gertrude Bell-Irving, Ethel Mary Maitland and Eva Margaretta Ormrod in favour of the Trustees of the Maitland-Ormrod Trust Fund, 1924.

d) Trust disposition and settlement of J.J. Bell-Irving, 25 April 1929, with codicils of 23 July 1930 and 18 October 1931.

e) Extract from the Trust disposition and settlement of J.J. Bell-Irving of 25 April 1929 from the Registers and Records of Scotland, Books of Council and Session, registered 10 July 1936.

f) Settlement between J.J. Bell-Irving, his grandson Ivor Maitland and Raymond Ernest Coxon, making provision for Ivor, 1929.

g) Discharge and indemnity by J.J. Bell-Irving, Eva Gertrude Bell-Irving, Lady Thirlestane and Boltoun, Eva Margaretta Ormrod, B.D.F. Beith and J.J. Paterson in regard to the Maitland-Ormrod Trust, 1929.

h) Settlement of Education Fund (indenture between Eva Margaretta Ormrod and Lady Thirlestane and Boltoun), 26 February 1931.

i) Trust deed by J.J. Bell-Irving establishing a Fund for Ivor Maitland, 19 March 1931.

j) Confirmation from the Sheriff Court of Roxburghshire of the executors of the late J.J. Bell-Irving (David Landale; Ethel Mary, Countess of Lauderdale; and D.G.M. Bernard), 18 September 1936.

k) List of share and stock certificates endorsed with the names of the executors of J.J. Bell-Irving, deceased, and still in the hands of McJerrow & Stevenson, 1936.

l) List of share and stock certificates endorsed with the names of the executors of J.J. Bell-Irving, deceased, and returned to the Royal Bank of Scotland, London, 1936.

m) List of share and stock certificates relating to J.J. Bell-Irving, deceased, retained by the Royal Bank of Scotland, London, 1936.

4. Summaries of legal documents: the Trust Deed for the Education Fund for J.J. Bell-Irving's grandchildren, 24 October 1923; the settlement between J.J. Bell-Irving, I.C.J. Maitland and R.E. Coxon, making provision for Ivor Maitland, 1929; the settlement of the Education Fund, 26 February 1931 (2 copies); the Trust Deed establishing the Fund for the Ivor Maitland, 19 March 1931; and the will of J.J. Bell-Irving, deceased, died 6 June 1936.
