Scope and Contents

Miscellaneous correspondence of B.D.F. Beith, Matheson & Co. Ltd, London, and W.J. Keswick, 22 Sussex Place, London, with each other and with a wide range of other correspondents, regarding Jardine, Matheson & Co. Ltd. The correspondence is comprised of originals and copies of letters, including handwritten letters to Beith and Keswick. The correspondents include D.G.M. Bernard, Bank of England; E.M. Gull, China Association, London; J.F. Owen, Matheson & Co. Ltd; Reuters Ltd, London; J.St.C. Smart; and E.J. Traynor, Southsea.

There are also many related papers, including a 11-page memorandum entitled 'Probable Position of British Commerce in Post War China', 1 September 1942, and a long account by David Bosanquet (of Jardine, Matheson & Co. Ltd) of his time in Hong Kong during the Japanese military offensive, December 1941-April 1942.
