Scope and Contents

Copies of correspondence and related papers regarding smuggling cases involving Indo-China Steam Navigation Co. Ltd vessels at Calcutta and the Airways Department of Jardine, Matheson & Co. Ltd. The file is divided into three sections:

1. Calcutta Customs: correspondence between Matheson & Co. Ltd, London, Jardine Matheson, Hong Kong, and Jardine Henderson Ltd, Calcutta; correspondence between Matheson & Co. Ltd and other correspondents, including the Chamber of Shipping of the United Kingdom, London, and Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation, London; and related letters and papers, 5 July 1954-14 March 1958, regarding smuggling incidents involving the Calcutta Customs, including cases relating to the Indo-China Steam Navigation Co. Ltd vessels 'Chungsang', 'Eastern Queen', 'Loksang' and 'Taksang'.

2. 'Eastern Queen' Smuggling: correspondence (including telegrams) between Matheson & Co. Ltd, London, Jardine Matheson, Hong Kong, and Jardine Henderson Ltd, Calcutta; correspondence between Matheson & Co. Ltd and other correspondents, including the Chamber of Shipping of the United Kingdom, London, and Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation, London; correspondence of the Indo-China Steam Navigation Co. Ltd, Hong Kong; correspondence between Jardine Henderson Ltd and the Collector of Customs, Calcutta; and related letters and papers, 5 June 1954-9 January 1956, regarding smuggling incidents at Calcutta in relation to the 'Eastern Queen'. The papers include the business card of D.S. Tennant, General Secretary, Navigators and Engineer Officers' Union, London.

3. Airways Department Smuggling: a small set of correspondence between Matheson & Co. Ltd, London, and Jardine Matheson, Hong Kong, 16 January 1953-30 May 1960 (all but one item of 1953), and related letters and papers, including a report by M.J.C. Auster on Airways Department smuggling, Hong Kong, 29 January 1953.

The ring-binder is labelled 'Smuggling [Airways, 'Eastern Queen', etc.] File I'.
