Scope and Contents

Correspondence and related papers regarding Matheson & Co. Ltd's involvement in the handling of passages by ship of various individuals and companies. Much of the material concerns the role in this business of the company's subsidiary Turnbull, Gibson & Co. Ltd as forwarding and travel agents, including the opening of its Travel Office at 79 Lombard Street, London, in 1959. There is also some material regarding air passages.

The file contains copies of correspondence between Matheson & Co. Ltd, London, Jardine Matheson, Hong Kong, and Jardine Matheson, Tokyo; correspondence between Matheson & Co. Ltd and a wide range of other correspondents, including the Federation of British Industries, London, Michael Laurie & Partners, London, Millars' Machinery Co. Ltd, Bishop's Stortford, Photome Ltd, Horsham, Sedgwick, Collins & Co. Ltd, London, Turnbull, Gibson & Co. Ltd, London, and Warburg & Co. Ltd, London; circular letters from Matheson & Co. Ltd regarding the services of Turnbull, Gibson & Co. Ltd; and related letters and papers, including the following documents:

1. Papers regarding a proposal for Turnbull, Gibson & Co. Ltd to be the general booking agents for Scillonian Air Services Ltd, including a report on the proposition by Gerald W. Flanagan, Turnbull, Gibson & Co. Ltd (Dunkelman Travel Branch), London, 29 January 1963.

2. A memorandum by Flanagan containing an evaluation of the Aero Commander Aircraft of Scillonian Air Services Ltd and a costing of the organisation to handle the company, 30 January 1963.

3. Two memoranda regarding the proposed booking agency for Scillonian Air Services Ltd, 1 and 8 February 1963.

4. Two sets of undated typescript lists (at the back of the file) of the addresses of companies at London E.C.3 and E.C.4, including manuscript additions listing contacts at the firms, 14 pages and 6 pages respectively (originally loose inside the file).

The ring-binder is labelled 'Shipping - Passages File I'.
