Scope and Contents

Copies of correspondence and other papers regarding discussions over the amalgamation of Jardine, Matheson & Co. Ltd's insurance companies, the Canton Insurance Office Ltd and Hongkong Fire Insurance Co. Ltd, leading to the Hongkong Insurance Co. Ltd becoming a subsidiary of the Canton Insurance Office Ltd and the renaming of the Canton Insurance Office Ltd as the Lombard Insurance Co. Ltd.

The file contains correspondence (including telegrams) between Matheson & Co. Ltd, London, and Jardine Matheson, Hong Kong (mainly), Alliance Assurance Co. Ltd, London, Bank of Montreal, London, Canadian Bank of Commerce, London, Cooper Brothers & Co., London, Linklaters & Paines, London, and others; correspondence between the Directors of Matheson & Co. Ltd and the company's Insurance Department, 3 & 4 Lime Street, London; some correspondence between Jardine Matheson, Hong Kong, and other correspondents; and related papers, including many financial statements about the firm's insurance companies and memoranda regarding the proposed reorganisation.

At the front of the file are several documents that were originally loose inside the ring-binder: a draft manuscript semi-official letter from W.J. Keswick to J.H. Keswick, Hong Kong, regarding the amalgamation of the insurance companies, circa January 1963; a manuscript table detailing the financial position of the Lombard Marine & General Insurance Co. Ltd, Canton Insurance Office, Hongkong Fire Insurance Co. and Lombard Insurance Co. Ltd, undated; a statement of the marine, aviation and transit insurance revenue account of the Lombard Marine & General Insurance Co. Ltd for the year ended 31 December 1951; a statement of the profit and loss account of the Lombard Marine & General Insurance Co. Ltd for the year ended 31 December 1951; and the balance sheet of the Lombard Marine & General Insurance Co. Ltd as at 31 December 1951.
