Scope and Contents
Copies of correspondence (including some telegrams and telex) between Matheson & Co. Ltd, London, and Jardine Matheson, Hong Kong; correspondence between Matheson & Co. Ltd and a wide range of other correspondents, including ABC Television Ltd, Teddington, Dynasty of Hongkong Ltd, New York, Eve Boutique Imports, New York, Linklaters & Paines, London, Portland Group Factors Ltd, Feltham, and various members of staff of C.W. Thomas & Co. Ltd; some correspondence of C.W. Thomas & Co. Ltd, London; and related letters and papers, including the following documents:
1. A memorandum about C.W. Thomas Ltd [sic.], 28 June 1965, including its history.
2. The balance sheet of C.W. Thomas & Co. Ltd at 30 June 1965.
3. A photocopy of an agreement for the acquisition of the whole of the issued share capital of C.W. Thomas & Co. Ltd by Matheson & Co. Ltd from Manya Bright and Gerald Stanley Davis, 15 September 1965, and a draft of the agreement.
4. A brochure for Dynasty of Hongkong Ltd's cotton dresses.
5. A brochure of Portland Group Factors Ltd.
6. An aide-memoire regarding the decision by Matheson & Co. Ltd to close down C.W. Thomas & Co. Ltd, 30 August 1967.
7. Press cuttings.
Some of the material concerns the agreement for C.W. Thomas & Co. Ltd to provide dresses for the character of Emma Peel in ABC Television Ltd's series 'The Avengers', including a copy of a registered user agreement whereby ABC Television Ltd granted C.W. Thomas & Co. Ltd the right to use its trademarks 'The Avengers' and 'Emma Peel' in respect of dresses for women, 1966, and an envelope dated 4 January 1967 containing press releases and a cutting from the 'Daily Telegraph' regarding 'The Avengers', particularly the clothes used in the series.
The bound material is dated 7 July 1965-14 August 1969. There is also a wallet labelled 'C.W. Thomas - Insurances etc.', which was attached originally to the inside cover of the file, containing a folder of insurance policies of C.W. Thomas & Co. Ltd, 11 January 1963-16 March 1964, and a few related letters and papers concerning insurance.
The ring-binder is labelled 'C.W. Thomas File I'.
