Scope and Contents

Correspondence (including telegrams) between Matheson & Co. Ltd, London, Jardine Matheson, Hong Kong, Jardine Matheson, Sydney, and Jardine Matheson, Tokyo; some correspondence of Matheson & Co. Ltd and Jardine Matheson, Hong Kong, with other correspondents, including H.C. Sleigh Ltd, Melbourne; and related letters and papers, including copies and cuttings of press articles and a copy of the heads of agreement arrived at between the Owners' Representatives of A.N.Z.E.S.C. and A.N.S.C.ON. at a meeting of 16-18 December 1968 regarding trade between Australia and Japan, including the admittance of the Flinders Shipping Co. Pty Ltd to membership of both organisations.

Many of the papers concern the construction of new roll-on, roll-off unit carrier (the 'Matthew Flinders') for the Flinders Shipping Co. Ltd for operation in a joint service with the Australia National Line and Japanese K Line from 1970. This material includes correspondence between Matheson & Co. Ltd and potential builders of the new vessel, including Harland & Wolff Ltd, Belfast, Scotts' Shipbuilding & Engineering Co. Ltd, Greenock, and Swan Hunter & Tyne Shipbuilders Ltd, Wallsend, and memoranda regarding the building contract which was signed with the Kawasaki Dockyard Co., Kobe. The other subjects in the file include the Australian National Line, container insurance, membership of the Australia & New Zealand/Eastern Shipping Conference and the Overseas Containers Ltd.

The correspondence is comprised of originals and copies of letters to Matheson & Co. Ltd and copies of other letters. The papers are dated 19 April 1968-3 November 1969, with a copy of a letter from London to Hong Kong, 4 January 1962, regarding newbuilding, which was added to the correspondence subsequently. The ring-binder is labelled 'The Flinders Shipping Co. Pty Ltd. File I'.
