Scope and Contents

Correspondence of Matheson & Co. Ltd, with related letters and papers, regarding Sir Frederick Whyte's trade mission to China on behalf of a number of British companies, including Jardine, Matheson & Co. Ltd, including his visit to Japan. There are three sections:

1. General correspondence of D.G.M. Bernard, David Landale and L.N. Leefe, Matheson & Co. Ltd, including some related letters and papers, 9 March 1928-14 March 1930. The correspondents include the Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China, London; Sir Robert Waley Cohen, London; Richard D. Holt, Ocean Steam Shipping Co. Ltd/China Mutual Steam Navigation Co. Ltd, Liverpool; Imperial Chemical Industries Ltd, London; Lancashire Cotton Corporation Ltd, Manchester; Lord Melchett, London; Sir John Pratt, Foreign Office; Archibald Rose, London; Colin C. Scott, John Swire & Co. Ltd, London; Stewart, Thomson & Co. Ltd, Manchester; G.W. Swire, John Swire & Co. Ltd; and Sir Frederick Whyte, Harbin, Hong Kong, London, Miyanoshita, Peking, Shanghai, Tientsin and Tokyo. There is also some correspondence between D.G.M. Bernard at Matheson & Co. Ltd and David Landale at Dalswinton, Dumfries. The related papers include lists of the company representatives attending the group meetings regarding Sir Frederick's mission and a memorandum entitled 'The Situation in China: An Appreciation', 1 March 1929, 13 pages, enclosed with a letter from Whyte in Shanghai to J.J. Paterson of Jardine, Matheson & Co. Ltd, 8 March 1929.

2. Letters (including drafts) from D.G.M. Bernard and D.F. Landale, Matheson & Co. Ltd, to Sir Frederick Whyte, Hong Kong, London, Shanghai and Tokyo, with a few related letters and papers, 15 March 1928-20 December 1929.

3. Letters from Sir Frederick Whyte, Chungking, Edinburgh, Harbin, Hong Kong, Miyanoshita, Mukden, Paris, Peking, Shanghai, Shasi and Tientsin, to D.G.M. Bernard and D.F. Landale, Matheson & Co. Ltd, London, 20 March 1928-16 July 1929, including his reports from China. There are also related papers, including press cuttings; a 'Confidential Memorandum on the Visit to China', March 1928; a memorandum entitled 'H.M.G. and the Shanghai Problem', 22 February 1929; and a second copy of 'The Situation in China: An Appreciation', 1 March 1929, 32 pages.

The original ring-binder for the correspondence was labelled on the spine 'Sir Frederick Whyte's Mission to China'.
