Scope and Contents

A wide range of correspondence and other papers relating to the Swatow Frontage. Much of the material concerns Jardine, Matheson & Co.'s application to fill in part of the frontage and erect offices, godowns and a wharf on the site. The envelope contains the following papers:

1. 'Plan of Messrs. Bradley & Co's Water frontage, projected Wharf, and adjoining part of the Harbour drawn by Otto Asverus, November 1881'.

2. A plan of Swatow, including...
the frontage, traced by R.G. Alford, surveyor, 9 March 1882. Some of the buildings have been labelled, as well as 'Williams Ground' adjoining Jardine, Matheson & Co.'s property, which has been labelled in pencil as 'now being filled in'.

3. Copies of three annotated photographs of views taken for Robert Craig (of Jardine, Matheson & Co.) of the Swatow Frontage, 15 and 18 March 1882: 'View standing on the Customs property looking towards the harbour', 'The Customs property about halfway between Customs office and bund with the operators back to the harbour and face towards the town', and 'View of unreclaimed frontage in Swatow harbour taken from Presbyterian mission premises'.

4. A set of originals and copies of letters from Robert Craig, Swatow, regarding Jardine, Matheson & Co.'s development plans for the harbour frontage: letters from Craig to F.B. Johnson, 14 April 1882 (original), 21 April 1882 (original), 15 May 1882 (original) and 7 November 1882 (copy), and a copy of a letter from Craig to Jardine Matheson, Shanghai, 21 April 1882. Craig's letter of 21 April 1882 encloses a copy of a letter from him to A. Huber, Commissioner of Customs, Swatow, 20 April 1882, regarding Jardine, Matheson & Co.'s application to the Imperial Maritime Customs to develop the harbour frontage.

5. An envelope of letters from G. James Morrison to F.B. Johnson regarding Jardine, Matheson & Co.'s plans to construct a wharf at Swatow, 19 January 1883, 21 January 1883 and 31 January 1883, with two sets of estimates of costs and an undated note from C.D. Bottomley to F.B. Johnson rejecting an offer to let eight of his godowns at Swatow.

6. Chinese and English copies of a loan from Jardine, Matheson & Co. to Siao Chee swan of Swatow, secured against his produce and property, 12 December 1904.

7. A bundle of Chinese deeds of premises and shops at Swatow, with a note in pencil dated 1 December 1907: 'Properties in Swatow owned by Siao Chee swan Compradore hypothecated to Jardine Matheson & Co in security for a loan of $100000'.

8. An envelope of sketch plans of wharves.

9. The original covering envelope to the documents labelled 'Papers & correspondence relating to Swatow frontage'.

The papers are in an envelope labelled 'Env.P-26-1' and 'Papers & Correspondence relating to Swatow Frontage'. This is inside another envelope labelled 'P 26' and Swatow'.
