With the extension of lines it was found that the Sydney terminal could not cope with both maintaining the locomotives and running services. The need for a new building was felt as early as 1875, and shortly afterwards John Whitton presented plans for the new running-sheds, which were built on a 62 acre site purchased by the Government at Redfern.
