Palmiste Est., Grenada, 1890 - 1893
Scope and Contents
285 x 230 mm. A view looking across land planted out with young cocoa trees towards the Estate proprietor's house. An interesting feature of this photograph is the decaying ruins of a sugar mill visible at the right of the picture. Grenada was fortunate in turning to cocoa and away from sugar production before the slump induced by the European manufacture of sugar beet, and around the time this photograph was taken the majority of the few sugar works which were operating existed largely for the production of locally consumed rum.
