 Item
Reference Code: GBR/0115/RCS/Y3059V/6

Scope and Contents

189 x 125 mm. A view looking along Main Street from Market Square, with a small section of the Post Office visible at the extreme right. In the right foreground stands the Obelisk, originally intended for a monument over the grave of Mr. G.T. Kemp, but owing to its size erected in the Market Square in 1863 where it stood for nearly 50 years (see Redgrave, p 405-6). Spans of oxen can be seen in Main Street with the square tower of the Congregational Church visible in the distance. At the left of Main Street, at the corner of St. Mary’s Terrace, are the flat roofed premises of Dreyfus and Co. with St Mary’s Church behind. This building was gutted by fire in 1895 (Redgrave p 119). For a full history of the building see A.T. Wirgman and C.E. Mayo ‘The Collegiate Church and the Parish of St. Mary, Port Elizabeth’ (Longmans, 1925). At the extreme left is the low porticoed façade of the Old Commercial Hall or Assembly Rooms which housed the Public Library from 1848-56 and the Law Court from 1856 until the 1880s. The new Public Library now stands on the site.
