Nourse’s Horse, 1880 - 1881

 Item
Reference Code: GBR/0115/RCS/Y3055A/22

Scope and Contents

190 x 140 mm. A group portrait, similar to Y3055A/21, showing members of Nourse’s Horse grouped near the Convent Redoubt. The figure standing in the front row in the centre of the group is presumably Henry Nourse (1857-1942), a soldier mining magnate and keen amateur sportsman. He had helped to raise the Kimberley Light Horse in 1874. He moved to the Transvaal in 1877 after the annexation, became a captain in ‘Ferreira’s Horse’, and saw service in the Sekukunl Campaigns and the Zulu War. He was given command of the Transvaal Mounted Rifles (later Police) in 1879 and raised and commanded Nourse’s Horse (60 horses) during the siege.
