Colonel Bellairs C.B.-District Commandant, Transvaal, 1880 - 1881
Scope and Contents
85 x 107 mm. A head and shoulder, three-quarter profile of Colonel (later Sir) William Bellairs (1828-1913) who came to Pretoria after an active military career as Brigadier General in charge of the Transvaal. Bellairs had entered the 49th Regiment in 1846, serving between 1854-73, in the Crimea, the West Indies, Ireland, Canada and Gibraltar. From December 1877-March 1878 he was placed in command of the Eastern frontier of Cape Colony during the 9th Frontier War and in 1879 served on Lord Chelmsford’s staff during the Zulu War, coming to Pretoria after a brief spell (April-May 1880) as Administrator of Natal. As successor to W.O. Lanyon (see Y3055A/17) he supervised the British evacuation of the Transvaal and wrote a history of the war ‘The Transvaal War’ (1885) before retiring in 1887.
