Pretoria Rifles. Convent Redoubt Garrison-Maj. F. Le Mesurier R.E. Comdr, 1880 - 1881
Scope and Contents
191 x 138 mm. Showing the assembled men of the Pretoria Rifles (450 strong) on parade in the square outside Convent Redoubt. Major Le Mesurier stands in front of the group with C.E. Steele, formerly the financial secretary at Pretoria and assistant commander of the Convent Redoubt (see Du Val, Vol. II p22). Keyed and identified on the print are: A. Fort Commeline on the hill in the distance and B. Military Camp in the background right of centre.
Frederick Augustus Le Mesurier (born 1839) entered the Royal Engineers in 1857 and served as Inspector of Army Signalling, 1875-80; Commandant of Pretoria, 1880-81, where he organised and trained a battalion of riles; Suakin, 1885; and Chief Engineer, Ireland, 1889-94.
