Govt. [i.e. Government] Flax Mill. Raw material (Phormium Tenax), 1900
Scope and Contents
198 x 144 mm. Showing cartloads of flax arriving at the Government Mill at Longwood. Flax was first introduced into Saint Helena in 1874 when the Colonial and Foreign Fibre Company set up machinery in Jamestown. This initial venture failed, but in 1907 a processing mill was set up by the Government at Longwood and in a few years the product became the only staple industry in the colony.
